The general music classroom, in particular, is a setting that is well-positioned to foster various facets of SEL. Music educators have many tools at their fingertips for meeting SEL needs of their students while simultaneously cultivating compelling musical engagements. The SEL movement purports to support people of all ages in developing healthy identities, interpersonal relationships, a sense of empathy, and the ability to make choices in ways that are compassionate toward self and others ( Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, 2021). Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) has come to the forefront of professional development across all content areas and grade levels in the field of education. Aside from implementing instruction to cultivate musicianship, music educators, now more than ever, are thrust into the role of providing comfort and reassurance to students, offering outlets to process the complicated feelings they may have in response to the world around them. Global health crises, environmental concerns, mental health issues, and more, filter into the world of children as they navigate typical developmental tasks of fostering academic skills, social connections, and a sense of identity.
